Hybrid athletes: what strength training and endurance in one week really mean

First things first: hybrid training means pursuing strength and endurance seriously in the same week instead of picking one of them. That is not a buzzword, it is a concrete load situation, and it places different demands on you than pure strength training or pure running.

Why the combination is more demanding

Strength and endurance training set different adaptation processes in motion, and these processes partly compete for the same resources: time, energy and above all recovery. If you do both, you do not have twice the load, you have one that is harder to plan.

The bottleneck is therefore rarely the training stimulus. It is the recovery in between.

The order that counts

Before we get to nutrients, three things that come first:

  1. Sleep. Adaptation happens at night. If you increase your volume and leave your sleep as it is, all you increase is fatigue. Details in the article on sleep and recovery.
  2. Energy and protein intake. With two forms of load your requirement rises, and a shortfall shows up first in your recovery, not on the scales.
  3. Planning. Do not put hard sessions back to back, leave space between them. That is free and works immediately.

Only after that is it worth looking at individual nutrients.

Electrolytes and magnesium

Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function, to electrolyte balance, to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Electrolytes are lost through sweat, and with a high training volume that adds up over the week. Magnesium is therefore the nutrient that comes up most often in this group. The magnesium products differ in the compound used and therefore in amount and tolerability.

Iron and oxygen transport

Iron contributes to normal oxygen transport in the body, to the normal formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

With endurance training, this is the area people ask about most. One important point: iron is not a nutrient to take in high doses as a precaution. The body stores it rather than excreting what it does not use. If you want clarity, have your ferritin level measured before you supplement.

Vitamin D and muscle function

Vitamin D contributes to the maintenance of normal muscle function and to the maintenance of normal bones.

Energy metabolism

Vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, niacin and pantothenic acid contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Vitamin C also contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism and to the normal function of the immune system.

The term energy metabolism refers to the metabolising of nutrients, not to a subjective feeling of energy. That is a common misunderstanding in this product category.

As for connective tissue

Tendons and ligaments adapt more slowly than muscles. That is one of the reasons why complaints often show up not in the muscle but at the attachment points when volume rises too quickly.
