Two tablespoons, about 20 g, once a day, in a cold or warm drink. That answers the question of how to use it, and you could stop reading here.
The more interesting part comes after that. Because the portion size is also the number that decides whether a collagen product is cheap or expensive. And it is never on the front of the pack.
Why the portion size determines the price
Recommended daily portions on the market range from about 2.5 g to 20 g. That is a factor of eight. Two packs with the same price and the same contents can therefore last for completely different lengths of time.
A worked example with rounded figures makes that tangible:
| Pack A | Pack B | |
|---|---|---|
| Contents | 450 g | 1,000 g |
| Daily portion | 20 g | 20 g |
| Lasts for | 22 days | 50 days |
| Price | €20.90 | €39.99 |
| Price per day | €0.93 | €0.80 |
The pack that looks cheaper is the more expensive one per day. That is exactly why the calculation is worth doing, and it goes like this:
Contents divided by daily portion gives the number of days. Price divided by the number of days gives the price per day.
With us: 20 g, 50 days, one kilo
Our collagen powder complex works with a full 20 g portion. This portion provides 19.8 g multi-collagen hydrolysate from four natural sources: beef collagen from pasture-raised cattle, fish, chicken and eggshell membrane, with collagen types I, II, III, V and X. Plus 100 mg vitamin C, 454.5 µg biotin and 100 mg hyaluronic acid produced by fermentation.
Vitamin C contributes to normal collagen formation for the normal function of the skin, biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal skin and normal hair. Both are already in the portion. Why vitamin C should not be missing from any collagen product is covered in the related post.
What time of day?
There is no set time. Take the portion whenever you will reliably take it. With a product you use over weeks, that is the only factor that really counts. Most people link it to an existing habit: the morning coffee, the shake after training, the yoghurt in the evening. On an empty stomach or with a meal makes no practical difference either.
What to stir it into?
The powder is neutral in taste and dissolves in cold and warm liquid alike. That removes the usual restrictions:
- Water, 200 to 300 ml, lukewarm is quickest
- Coffee and tea, the heat does not matter
- Smoothie, shake or juice
- Yoghurt, porridge, soup
The reason lies in the processing: the collagen is hydrolysed, the peptides are at around 500 Dalton. Unlike gelatine, a hydrolysate does not gel and does not clump even when stirred into cold liquid.
How long to keep it up?
Collagen is not a product for one week. The body renews connective tissue slowly and continuously. Accordingly, a daily portion over months is the realistic way to use it, not a short course. The 1 kg pouch is designed for exactly that: 50 days from one pack, without reordering every two weeks.
The calculation, once more
If you take away only one thing for your next comparison, let it be these three steps: contents divided by portion, price divided by days, and only then put two products side by side. Everything else on the packaging is design.
